Lesbians Can Be Thrown Out Of Christian Schools
Why do people send their children to private schools, specifically private religious schools? The general answer is because the education provided at these schools is: (1) values based and (2) better than an education at public school.
The values-based issue of private schools recently came before the 4th District Court of Appeals in California. A unanimous ruling said that a private Christian school, whose code of conduct stated that students could be expelled for immoral acts on or off campus, could expell two girls who engaged in lesbian activities.
Lawyers on both sides of the issue said this would set a precedent that allows private religious schools across California to engage in discrimination based on sexual activities.
That is a true statement.
The court rested its decision on the fact that such religious schools are not considered businesses under the law. If they were considered businesses, then they are prohibited from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation and activity (under the Unruh Civil Rights Act).
This is a win for conservatives across the state. Conservatives have come under attack in California; their desires to keep marriage between a man and a woman, to decry the number of unwedded teen mothers, and to keep their children from engaging in premarital sex have all been criticized. However, this ruling is a victory.
It means that when someone makes a choice to engage in values based education, where imparting conservative values is part of the educational experience, children who violate that can be expelled. In a society that tends to lack a method of transmission of values (I dare you to argue with me that we transmit values in this society), this is a huge win.
It lets children know that their inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated in a school, simply because they engage in it off-campus. These girls were found out through their myspace pages. This is a lesson to all people about values, traditions, and why you should beware what you post on myspace.
I hope that conservatives celebrate this as a win.
