More Handouts and Fiscal Irresponsibility
So the federal government has finally admitted that their $700 billion mortgage rescue plan is not going to work. In fact, the way it was structured has made it unworkable. Color me shocked. All this shows is that the people making laws and passing bills about money for the federal government (Congress) has no idea about fiscal responsibility.
As it turns out, neither do members of the California Legislature. They know they have a huge budget hole. In fact, they created the budget that has the huge hole. They knew when they passed this budget that it was false, and wouldn’t provide any security. So, they passed it anyways. Now they have a problem, and they won’t deal with it. The Senate and Assembly are holding floor sessions over this weekend…but there isn’t anything to vote on, so what are they doing? Racking up per diem so they can put the budget even further in the hole?
So what is the solution for the budget problem in California? The members of California’s Congressional delegation seem to think it is to ask President-elect Obama for handouts for California. The range of handouts being asked for is enormous. The members want money for: waste water plants, sewage plants, roads, ports, schools, health care, air quality management, community services, a community mural project, and other items. Now, if you consider that Congress can only act on their enumerated powers - I wonder where all of these requests fit in. Also, considering most of the members of the California Congressional delegation have passed so much spending that the country is in huge debt - where do they think that the money for these things is going to come from? At some level, do these people even think?
They want more money for CA - ok. I don’t mind that request. But then they don’t want to balance the budget, pay down debt, or do the responsible thing. I mind that. If there is money left over after paying for necessities and paying down debt, go wild requesting projects. But since the country is in deficit spending mode, maybe the prudent thing to do to show that you care about the country is to spend money paying for necessities - like debt management. Otherwise, all they are doing is creating huge problems for our children. I calculated it out. In order to pay down the debt, the US would (right now) have to spend no money on anything but paying down the debt for 5 years to have it paid off. How disgusting is that figure? I mean, lets start forcing Congress to control the debt. I am all for a Constitutional amendment to eliminate deficit spending for the US. I think that would be great. There would be some hard times while we were adjusting to it, but it would be better in the long run.
Anyways, I am so tired of this fiscal irresponsibility. I write letters to my members of Congress, and I am ignored. I am excited that McClintock looks to be the winner of the Congressional seat because he’s one of those fiscally responsible people. He will not spend money. He hates it. I think that’s a great view to take right now. I don’t know how long he will be like that in Congress, but he was like that in the state Legislature. So I hope he makes some friends and has a constituency that grows.
Anyways, I encourage you all to think about the debt every once in a while. And think about how all these programs are going to affect the debt. Then think about what it would be like if the US could spend no money - none - on anything but debt payments for 5 years. I think we all wouldn’t be American’s anymore. I think we might belong to some other country. So let’s encourage our leaders to be fiscally responsible and stop voting for people who won’t do this.
